When AI becomes eyes, voices and hands

Describing the world to a blind person, captioning a conversation as it happens, giving a voice to those who cannot write: artificial intelligence is changing the lives of people with disabilities. And Africa has a card to play.

When AI becomes eyes, voices and hands

A phone that describes a street, a banknote or a family photo to a blind person. Captions that write themselves while the other person speaks. A synthetic voice that reads an official document to someone who never learned to read. These tools exist, they fit in a pocket, and artificial intelligence makes them sharper every year.

For us, the stakes go beyond disability in the strict sense. A voice interface that understands the person speaking to it means digital access for everyone the written word leaves out: people with low vision, older people, people who never went to school. In societies where the spoken word carries further than the screen, voice is not a comfort feature. It is the front door.

One condition cannot be worked around: these systems must understand our languages and our accents. A screen reader that does not speak its user's language is useless. Models are trained on data, and data for our languages remains scarce. It will not come from elsewhere: that work belongs to the people who speak these languages every day.

That is why we design our systems to be accessible from day one: verified contrast, keyboard navigation, text a synthetic voice can read. Accessibility is not a layer you add at the end. It is a design requirement, and one of the fields where artificial intelligence will serve the greatest number of people.
