Catching up: why AI is our greatest historic opportunity

Every industrial revolution widened the gap between those who led it and those who endured it. The artificial intelligence revolution can reverse that logic.

Catching up: why AI is our greatest historic opportunity

The steam engine required factories. Electricity required grids. Computing required decades of equipment, schools and industry. With each wave, the price of entry was paid in generations, and the gap widened between those who built and those who watched.

Artificial intelligence breaks that rule. Its main capital is neither the factory nor the machine: it is knowledge, and knowledge travels. A developer with a connection now reaches the same models as the largest laboratories. Africa has already proven it can skip steps: mobile payment took hold there without waiting for everyone to have a bank.

Skipping a step is not automatic, though. It demands training people at scale, owning our data instead of giving it away, and solving our own problems rather than importing solutions designed for others. A continent that merely consumes other people's artificial intelligence catches up on nothing: it simply changes its supplier of dependency.

The window is open now, while the technology is young and the positions are not yet set. That is the meaning of our work: building systems our clients own, training the teams who keep them alive, and taking our share of a revolution that, for once, does not ask for permission.
